Mock Sales Call Interview: How to Prepare for the Roleplay

3 min readBy the Salesy team

The short answer: Prepare for a mock sales call interview by understanding the role, buyer, offer, call stage, and objective. Use a simple conversation structure, listen to the interviewer's responses, recover openly from missing information, and be ready to explain what you would change after the exercise.

A mock call usually evaluates how you think and respond, not whether you can guess a secret script. Clear preparation, useful questions, composure, and self-awareness matter more than forcing the scenario to a predetermined win.

Clarify the exercise before you start

Confirm the time limit, product, buyer role, call stage, information available to you, and expected outcome. Ask whether the interviewer wants a cold call, discovery conversation, demo, or close. These are different exercises with different reasonable next steps.

Research the company and customer enough to form hypotheses, but label assumptions as assumptions. If the brief leaves out information that a real rep would have, state what you would normally verify and continue with a reasonable premise.

Show a clear conversation structure

Open with identity, purpose, relevance, and an appropriate question. Listen to the answer and build from it. Avoid rushing through a checklist to prove you know many techniques. A few relevant follow-ups show more judgment than ten unrelated questions.

When the buyer objects, acknowledge and clarify before answering. If you do not know a product fact, say so and explain how you would find the approved answer. Inventing a confident claim creates a larger problem than acknowledging a limit.

Use the debrief to show coachability

After the roleplay, identify one strong choice and one moment you would replay. Cite what the buyer said and how your response affected the call. Avoid blaming the scenario or pretending every choice was intentional.

If the interviewer offers feedback, listen through it, ask one clarifying question if needed, and explain how you would apply it. Some interviews include a second attempt specifically to observe whether you can change behavior.

Practice plan

Run a twelve-minute mock interview

Practice the call and the explanation that follows it.

  1. Use two minutes to read and clarify the brief.
  2. Run a seven-minute roleplay without stopping.
  3. Take one minute to identify the pivotal moment.
  4. Use two minutes to explain one strength, one change, and your reasoning.
  5. Replay the pivotal moment if your partner can continue.
