Sales Qualification Questions for Real Opportunities
The short answer: Sales qualification questions should establish whether a meaningful problem exists, whether solving it is a priority, whether your approach fits, how a decision happens, and whether the buyer will participate in the work needed to evaluate change.
Qualification protects both sides from a long process with no decision behind it. It is not a checklist used to corner the buyer; it is a shared test of whether continued evaluation is worth the time.

Qualify the problem and its impact
Ask what happens today, where it fails, how often the issue appears, and what consequence follows. A stated interest in your category is weaker than a problem the buyer can describe through real events.
Test whether the impact is large enough to justify change. A real problem can still be too small, too rare, or too far from current priorities to support an opportunity.
Qualify priority, timing, and commitment
Ask why the issue is being examined now, what happens if it remains unchanged, and what competes with it. Timing should come from the buyer's environment rather than a discount deadline created by the seller.
Commitment appears in actions: providing data, involving stakeholders, reviewing material, or defining success. Friendly conversation without mutual work is not the same as a qualified process.
Qualify fit and the decision path
Explore technical, operational, commercial, and legal requirements early enough to matter. Then map who uses the solution, who is affected, who evaluates risk, and who approves the spend.
Do not turn authority into a blunt challenge. Ask how similar decisions are made and what each person needs to become comfortable. The answer is a plan for evaluation, not a reason to dismiss the current contact.
Practice plan
Qualify a deal in six questions
Practice gathering enough evidence to decide whether to advance, nurture, or close the opportunity.
- What is happening today?
- What does the problem change?
- Why address it now?
- What would success look like?
- How will the organization decide?
- What will each side do before the next conversation?
Frequently asked questions
What makes a sales opportunity qualified?
A meaningful problem, sufficient priority, plausible fit, a workable decision path, and mutual participation in evaluation.
When should qualification happen?
Begin on the first substantive conversation and refine it throughout the process as new stakeholders, requirements, and evidence appear.
Can a prospect be interested but unqualified?
Yes. Interest may exist without impact, priority, fit, resources, or a decision process strong enough to support action.
