How to Handle the “Too Expensive” Sales Objection

3 min readBy the Salesy team

The short answer: When a buyer says “too expensive,” acknowledge the concern and ask what they are comparing: available budget, another option, expected return, or the cost of staying the same. Respond to that specific gap before discussing a discount.

Price objections feel direct, so reps often answer too quickly. The buyer names a number, and the rep starts defending it. Slow the moment down. “Expensive” describes a relationship between cost and something else; your job is to learn what the other side of that relationship is.

Pair this guide with How to Respond When a Prospect Says “Send Me an Email”, then use the practice plan below to rehearse.

What “too expensive” can mean

The buyer may lack budget, see insufficient value, compare you with a lower-priced alternative, fear implementation cost, or use price as a safe way to pause. Those are different objections and should not receive the same answer.

Ask one neutral question: “Compared with what you expected?” or “Is the concern the total budget, the timing, or the return?” Give the buyer room to explain without making them defend the objection.

Reconnect price to the problem

If the buyer cannot connect the solution to a meaningful problem, the price will always feel high. Return to the impact they described: lost time, missed revenue, risk, or operational drag. Do not invent an ROI number. Use their inputs and state assumptions clearly.

Sometimes the discovery was too shallow. Say so. “I may not have understood the impact well enough. Can we revisit what this delay changes for the team?” is more credible than launching into a generic value speech.

Do not trade price for nothing

An immediate discount teaches the buyer that the first price was flexible and may not solve the real concern. If scope, term, timing, or service level can change, make the trade explicit. A smaller package is a different offer, not a concession disguised as urgency.

When a discount is appropriate, connect it to a mutual commitment such as a longer term, adjusted scope, or faster decision. Keep the logic transparent. Pressure erodes the trust you need for implementation.

Know when the price is genuinely wrong

The buyer may not have the resources or may value the problem less than your offer requires. That is not a rebuttal failure. Qualify clearly and leave the relationship intact.

A useful close is: “It sounds like the economics do not work under the current priorities. Shall we pause and revisit if that changes?” Clear disqualification protects time on both sides and makes future contact less awkward.

Practice plan

Practice four versions of “too expensive”

Use the same words from the buyer, but change the reason underneath them.

  1. Budget: no money is allocated this period.
  2. Value: the impact is smaller than the price.
  3. Comparison: a competitor quoted less.
  4. Risk: implementation effort makes the total cost feel high.
  5. Ask one clarifying question before giving any answer.
  6. Confirm whether the specific concern was resolved.

Frequently asked questions

What should I say when a customer says the price is too high?

Acknowledge it and ask what they are comparing the price with. Clarify whether the issue is budget, value, another quote, timing, or implementation cost before responding.

Should I offer a discount immediately?

Usually no. An immediate discount may weaken trust and fail to solve the real concern. First understand the gap; if you change price, tie it to a clear change in scope or commitment.

How do I defend my price without sounding defensive?

Connect the price to the buyer's stated problem, desired outcome, and relevant evidence. Keep the explanation short and invite the buyer to test the assumptions.
